Better photos.

Sometimes we get smart early; sometimes it's late. Anyway here are the same three photos after run through a photo editor. It's always late with me!

I do like these guys.

The animation is first rate.

I'd like some ragged Swedes also.

I like the quality of the range too (not to mention the first rate pait job you've done - excellent).

How did you do the basing? it looks really nice and the colour is terrific.

So it looks we're off to the Baltic once I've completed the French - which should be sometime around next August!

Yes, a very nice job . . . and good looking figures as well.

Thanks! I am hoping this line really stays true to the initial castings and gets completed. I have been working on figure scales mentally.

For the base I use very fine sand. I start with a mix of white glue and water about 66/33 glue to water. I brush that on and then emerse the base in very fine sand. ( You need to be careful not to cause the glue mix to push up on the figures legs) After that drys I use a dark brown ink to coat the entire base and then dry brush heavy with a mustard brown or saddle bag brown and lightly with a khaki. Finally I use some olive paint to paint sploches and sprinkle with terrain grass. When I feel inspired I'm prone to adding the occasional twig or stone while the sand mix is still wet.

This is a period I have wanted to paint for quite awhile now so I have high hopes for Bill T. and Musketeer Miniatures.

What do you think about the faces?

I've been looking at some photographs on the Yahoo group for MM and Paul Reekie's two battalions look a little odd. The figures all appear to be "howling" or at least have e wide, round open mouths and it all looks strange.

I'm not sure that the photographs from Paul actually make the figures look attractive at all.

Paul,

I think part of it is the method of painting faces that he chose. I tend to not paint eyes on my figures as at a distance all you see in a real figure is the heavy shadow of the eye socket. It’s a technique that I think looks good when figures are grouped, it’s also a lot easier then painting eyes. The same thing for mouths, either a black line or black cavity, there maybe teeth sculpted in there but I’m not going to paint them. So I also don’t wash the whole face, I use a liner and drag ink into the crevasse via the capillary effect, around and on the face. The final thing I’ve noticed especially with my own painting; is that a figure looks great on the table, then I run it through a photo editor and blow the figure up to twice actual size and I can see all of the problems. Even my offering has this massive lower lip that really isn’t noticeable on the normal figure.

The Russian castings so far are all fairly tight lipped stoic looking fellows; in very Russian fashion they seemed resigned to their fate. The Swedes do have a mix of tight lipped grim veterans and some open mouthed ‘howlers or gulping air while charging’. I bought one of each of the 4 packs available and there is nothing in them that would keep me from buying this line of castings. I think the real tale of the tape will be the command. If this line doesn’t pan out Sash & Saber is going to produce 40mm GNW this summer. I haven’t bought any larger scale WSS so I’m not tied to a certain size figure. (I sold all of my 15mm WSS years ago)

I would suggest that you buy one pack of the Swedes in Karpus attacking, paint them in your style (which is very nice) and see if you like the results. If not I suspect you could sell them on the M-M yahoo group for a profit.
